PL: Pierwsza wersja tekstu powstała w 1935 roku i została opublikowana w 1938 roku w piśmie #Skamander. Ostatnie poprawki do tekstu Gombrowicz wprowadził w 1968 roku, usuwając wszystkie kwestie Iwony. Przy głównej postaci napisał « Milczy ».
To historia dziewczyny mało interesującej i milczącej, którą poślubia kierowany kaprysem Książę. Bierna i obojętna Iwona budzi wyrzuty sumienia, nienawiść, agresję i ujawnia ukryte instynkty królewskiego dworu.

EN: Completed in 1935, Ivona was first published in 1938 in the prestigious journal Skamander in Poland and was published as a single volume for the first time in 1958 by PIW, Warsaw. The cover of this volume has been illustrated by Tadeusz Kantor
Ivona is the story of a mute, unmemorable girl whom the Prince marries on a whim. Ivona, passive and indolent, stimulates remorse, shameful instincts, hate, and aggression among those surrounding her. Her character shows how difficult we are to accept those who are very different from us.
Ivona, Princess of Burgundia is Gombrowicz’s most popular play and the most performed worldwide. Translated today in 23 languages, the play has been staged, among others, by Jorge Lavelli (Odeon Theater, 1965), Ingmar Bergman (Munich, 1980), at the opera by Grzegorz Jarzyna (Opera Narodowa, 2004) or Luc Bondy (Opéra Garnier, Paris, 2009).
Witold Gombrowicz would see a performance of one of his own plays just once: A production of Ivona in Nice (France) in 1967.
